the maker bar was a feature of the project lab at the derby silk mill museum. it was a participation area we prototyped during the maker residency in 2016.
during the residency i worked with three other makers, we were invited to consider how we might evolve the maker bar from where it was at the beginning of the residency period – basically the wheeled making area into something that was exciting and easy to engaged with.
i proposed that we adopted a menu system on the bar where the visitor could choose what to make and with what. along with the menu it was proposed to make an a board for the bar to help communicate to visitors what was possible for them to do during their visit to the museum.

it was interesting to make the components for the maker bar and to be a part of the prototyping phase.
the ideas involved in the maker bar fed into the making invitations at the museum when it re opened in 2021 as the museum of making at derby silk mill.
